ScotlandShop has announced its acquisition of House of Tartan, the renowned "original tartan website" and home to the world's first tartan database. ScotlandShop views this less of a corporate takeover and more of a “family coming together.” The House of Tartan team and its experience will remain.
Established in 1996, House of Tartan was a true innovator. The brainchild of Blair Urquhart, a visionary with a deep understanding of tartans, the company created the world's first tartan database, a resource for tartan enthusiasts everywhere. House of Tartan continued to push boundaries, becoming a leader in tartan design and registration, offering in-house fabric printing, and establishing a strong partnership program with over 20 Scottish clans.
Founded in 2002 by Anna White, ScotlandShop began its journey in the Scottish Borders, fuelled by a love for Scottish textiles, fashion, and a desire to support the local economy. Over the years, the company has blossomed into an international brand, offering a wide range of tartan clothing, accessories, and homeware, all delivered worldwide.
This union will offer its customers guidance on tartan selection, clan heritage, and customisation; continuation of its clan and family society partnerships; and expanded product range; enhanced customer service; dedication to Scottish traditions; and continued quality and craftsmanship.

In May 2024, COSCA Communication Chairman Bart Forbes sat down with ScotlandShop International Brand Manager Emily Redman over Zoom to learn more about the merger. Emily remarked that the merger “just felt like an instant fit.”
Concerning the products, Emily noted that any feedback from the current clients would be very helpful. Some items are “not something we've done before, but actually it's not really about our view” because “the last thing that we want to do is take things away that people actually like.”
Regarding bespoke kilts, Emily noted that “at the moment, estimated makeup time is standard be five weeks but then we have expedited makeup of three to four weeks.” For international customers, she explained that “we can do a virtual appointment like this via video call, and then we can demonstrate how to take measurements.”
Currently, House of Tartan has contracts with ten clan societies regarding offering a 10% discount on products or providing a 10% commission for products sold. Emily noted that “we're just trying to gather all the existing contracts that they had and try to reach out to those people.” She explained that the same agreement will be used for ScotlandShop merchandise: “either we can do it so that it's a 10% discount code that goes to the members, or we can do it so that we split it so it's 5% discount for the members… and pay 5% commission to the society.” She said that “really the only way logistically, we think we can track all of this is through codes.”
Emily emphasized that “we're a business, but… we have a genuine interest and passion and making sure that these societies can last. And if they are struggling, if there is something that we can do to help… then, we want to know what we can do.
