Video Reviews The Social Life of the Mackenzies in the 17th and 18th Centuries
A picture of how our Scottish Highland forebears entertained themselves in their leisure in the 17th and 18th centuries: what would have made life fulfilling and rewarding for them beyond merely getting by. Inspired by personal research into my own family history, this talk challenges the widespread stereotype of Highlanders in this period as uneducated savages and illustrates the highly sophisticated, diverse and cosmopolitan nature of Highland culture during the early modern period. While they continued to enjoy their own proud traditions - which, in fact, went on to be celebrated by intellectuals abroad - the Highland Scots also participated in some of the most sophisticated cultural movements of their day. Presented by the Clan MacKenzie Podcast.
