The Society was founded in 1980 at the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games by a multi-clan group of residents of Montreat, North Carolina. There are many people of Scottish descent that come to Montreat and western North Carolina annually for vacation, recreation, and religious conferences. It was only natural to establish some type of organization that would appeal to these people.
